With the growing popularity of wakeboarding and wake surfing in recent years, specialized tow boats have become increasingly common sights. Many of these boats boast the Supra nameplate.
The Supra boat company raised a lot of eyebrows when it opened up shop in 1981. The Supra Sport, the company’s first model, boasted an adjustable wake plate and a rear ski locker – unique features for its day. Subsequent models added further innovations, including big block engines, open bows (unique at the time for inboard-powered boats) and Kevlar-reinforced hulls. If nothing else, Supra – with its sister brand, Moomba – has built an impressive legacy of innovation.
The fruits of Supra’s ongoing quest to create the ultimate tow boat can be seen in its premium SC350 model, described as being “infused with shock and awe.” It’s an apt description, but incomplete, as there’s far more to this boat than just jaw-dropping performance.
To begin, it’s helpful to note that the SC350 has two very closely-related siblings, the SC450 and SC550. In fact, they’re the very same boat, but equipped with increasingly more powerful Indmar Assault V8 engines. Where the SC350 comes with a 345 hp 5.7L, the SC450 is pushed around by a marinized version of GM’s 450 hp, 6.2L LS3 – the same engine that’s found in the Chevy Camaro. If you want even more grunt, Supra’s SC550 gets the monstrous 550 hp, 6.2L LSA that’s normally seen under the hood of Corvettes. For most of us, the 345 hp SC350 is more than enough boat – especially when we’re wake surfing at 10 mph.
What makes the SC350 such a great watersports boat is its layout. The spacious cockpit offers full wrap-around seating for up to 14 people, truly making the most of the boat’s 23-foot, eight-inch overall length and 102-inch beam. A massive U-shaped lounge begins just behind the helm seat, wraps across the transom, then extends forward along the port side all the way to the passenger console. Some brilliant engineering in the form of Supra’s Triple-Up flip-up seat cushion allows two people to comfortably spot boarders from the port side, with a third spotter to starboard.
As one has come to expect from Supra, the upholstery fit and finish is exemplary, with tight, neat stitching and generously proportioned seat cushions that provide just the right balance of cushy comfort and firm support. Snap-in carpeting provides comfort underfoot, while abundant beverage holders and beefy grab handles are positioned throughout so they’re always within easy reach.
Supra’s SC350 has a deeper hull than one might expect to find in a wakeboard boat, which allows deeper seating and extra protection from spray – a consideration that will always be appreciated by those who boat on larger lakes and who may face an occasional afternoon chop.
From the main cockpit, pass forward through the sweeping walk-through windshield into the bow area, which seats two additional passengers. A removable bow seat cushion transforms this space into a comfy lounge pad.
The helm seat features Supra’s electric E-Boost height adjustment, with a swivel base and a flip-up bolster. Thanks to the seat’s height-adjustable design, visibility out the gracefully curved walk-through windshield is excellent, with the bolster set in either the up or down position.
The helm itself is neatly laid out with full instrumentation – tach, speedometer, fuel gauge, oil gauge, temperature gauge, volt meter and depth gauge – neatly placed and clearly visible no matter how the stylish tilt steering wheel is adjusted. Supra’s Zero Off GPS cruise control comes standard. Two rows of rocker switches located beneath the primary gauges control lights (including underwater lighting and tower lights), the engine compartment blower, the bilge pump, cabin heat and other accessories, while controls for the ballast tanks are situated adjacent to the throttle. The SC350 comes standard with 900 pounds of sub-floor ballast capacity, which is generous for a boat of this size. For those who want the ultimate wakeboarding experience, a ballast enhancement option allows this capacity to be boosted to a whopping 2,200 pounds.
Completing the helm is a standard Polk Audio AM/FM stereo with Bluetooth, USB, auxiliary input and cockpit remote. Overhead, a stunning black Roswell Pro Edge tower with swivel board racks, four spin speakers and a Bimini top rounds out the cockpit.
The swim platform on the SC350 is oversized, and finished with a comfortable, soft grip surface. A pair of small storage compartments on either side of the transom step into the cockpit accommodate wet tow ropes and similar items, while a pair of beverage holders and a stereo remote provide added convenience.
The SC350 can produce the kind of truly mammoth, smooth wakes that boarders and surfers dream about. With an impressive standard feature list and drool-worthy engine options, the SC350 offers world champion performance for those who demand the best.
