Both electric and hybrid system in development
Swedish inboard and sterndrive engine manufacturer Volvo Penta has set 2021 as its deadline to introduce electric and hybrid power.
“Volvo Penta is already several years into its electrification journey,” says chief technology officer, Johan Inden. “The advanced engineering projects we are currently running, and the performance data received, gives us confidence that we are on the right technology path to offer customers a compelling business case for electrification.”
With their high torque, electric engines have the potential to dramatically transform boating by offering faster acceleration than existing gas and diesel engines, along with quieter operation and a reduced environmental footprint.
With approximately 3,500 dealers in over 130 countries, Volvo Penta is a global manufacturer of marine engines and drives. As part of this increased commitment toward electrification Volvo Penta has restructured its organization and committed to an ambitious investment program, including establishing a development and test lab at its Swedish headquarters.
“We have a deep understanding of power systems in a wide variety of applications, which we will use to help customers meet the transformation towards sustainable power in the months and years ahead,” said Inden. “These solutions will not just be more sustainable , they will also be high performance – delivering a no compromise, win – win offering for customers and the environment.”
