The engine is the heart of any motorized boat and keeping it protected is your responsibility. So why can’t you just use your car’s motor oil on your boat? Well, boat engines have different requirements. First, they need additional protection from water. The second main difference between boat engines and automobile engines how hard they run. Marine engines run much faster and spend long periods of time at or near the red line. What Are the Different Types of Marine Oil?

Making things a bit more complicated, there are two different types of marine engines and you need to make sure you get the right oil to go with it.

Two-Stroke Oil (TC-W3): While there are not a lot of two-stroke marine engines being produced today, a lot of older boats on the water still rely on them and the oil requirements are unique. Unlike modern engines, two-stroke engines need the oil mixed with the fuel. Oil for two-stroke marine engines is called TC-W3.

Four-Stroke Oil (FC-W): Modern four-stroke engines are designed to run cleaner. Marine oil for four-stroke engines works much the same as it does in your car or truck. There will be a separate reservoir for the oil and it gets pumped from and returns to a sump and it lubricates and cools your engine.

Four-Stroke Oil (FC-W Catalyst Compatible): Further adding to the confusion, some four-stroke engines are equipped with exhaust after-treatment and these require a slightly different type of oil called FC-W Catalyst Compatible to properly protect and lubricate.

The good news is your boat’s owner’s manual will tell you exactly what type of oil you need. When shopping for oil, be sure to look for the National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA) on the bottle. The NMMA tests and certifies oils to make sure they offer the protection required for your boat’s engine.
