Tohatsu America Corp. (TAC) has introduced several innovations and changes the Tohatsu outboard line for model year 2017, including the official release of its new 5 horsepower LPG propane outboard.

Originally announced at the 2016 IBEX show, the new 5 hp engine is powered by propane, which exhausts 12 percent less CO2 than gasoline, making it a cleaner option for boaters.

“The most appealing feature is that sailors are no longer forced to carry gasoline on board,” said Jim Morgenthaler, TAC vice president. “We know this is something that has been requested for many years, and we are excited to finally offer an LPG outboard to our customers.”

Tohatsu’s new LPG motor is said to feature easier starting, quieter operation and require less maintenance on fuel-related parts. The 5 hp LPG outboard comes in a variety of shaft lengths including short, long and ultra long Sail Pro model.

Tohatsu also revealed new 40/50 hp four-strokes for 2017, which are available in Beluga White. Available in May, the engine now has an additional color option to help boaters choose which color best fits with their boat.

Also new for 2017 are updated 9.9, 15 and 20 horsepower models, said to be the  lightest battery-less Electronic Fuel Injection (EFI) outboards in their class. Offering excellent fuel efficiency, easier starting and the decreased possibility of ethanol related problems, the new engines will be available in dealerships by early Autumn 2017.

“We are very excited to be able to offer these incredibly innovative new additions to our product line in 2017,” said Morgenthaler. “Our new LPG and EFI outboards make boating easier, and more user-friendly. Plus, the Beluga White 40/50hp adds a new level of customization to our lineup. With these new additions, we are increasing the variety of boaters Tohatsu will cater to.”
